She Came from the Stars & Went to the Laundromat

May 20, 2025

This shoot was one giant love letter to sci-fi, chaos, and creative freedom. Inspired by 1960s space flicks and late-night retro glam, I brought together some of my favorite creative minds to build a world where glitter, antennas, and a bedazzled space blaster could absolutely coexist in peace. Miki played our cosmic heroine with full pink body paint, platform boots, and a stare that said, “Take me to your weirdest vintage store.” It was the most fun kind of fever dream—and I’m still not over it.

The Concept:

This idea sparked from a totally casual convo with my husband about Star Trek aesthetics—colorful lights, funky silhouettes, and that nostalgic, slightly eerie vibe of retro sci-fi. I pitched a vision to Miki (aka @mikithemushroomqueen) and Jenn (@grs.vintage) of a glam alien queen stranded on Earth… who naturally finds herself both in a faux star-studded stage set and a dingy 24-hour laundromat. They said yes faster than you can say “beam me up.”

We crafted a two-part story:

  1. Studio setup with stars, antennas, and a tinfoil-textured dreamscape
  2. Nighttime chaos in a local laundromat, with colored gels, reflections, and just enough theatrical lighting to get weird

The Execution:

We shot for nearly 6 hours across both locations—fully leaning into the drama. Jenn brought vintage pieces that shouldn’t work together but somehow did (like, pink tights + antennae + go-go boots? Yes please). Miki came fully transformed, and I added the finishing touches: a custom-bedazzled space gun, fog machine (which did trigger the fire alarm), and lighting that turned washers into portals.

Everything was built with intention—but we kept space for spontaneity. The way the green light hit the glass at the laundromat? Fully unplanned, and one of my favorite frames of the night.

Why I Loved This Shoot:

This is what I live for. Helping someone step into a world that shouldn’t exist—but does, just for a moment. Watching Miki become this bold, strange, stunning creature in front of my camera was actual magic. It wasn’t just a photoshoot—it was a damn production, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

So, what did my client Miki think?

“You really helped me transform—and then helped me see it. I’ve never felt cooler in my life.”
